Good communication is essential in all parts of life – personal and business. Becoming more fluent in communication will open doors for you that you never thought possible. And to help you on your journey to better communication, here are some tips and tricks that will take your game to the next level.
- Know how to ask
Remember the quote: “The fool wonders, the wise man asks”. This quote holds true in real life as well. Stop wondering what a person means and ask the questions even if you feel stupid asking. Asking questions is but one distinguishing factor between people that succeed and the ones that fail.
It is important to really listen what a person is saying and making sure that you do not miss things, just because you are waiting for your turn to speak. Simon Sinek has a very nice quote about this: “There is difference between listening and waiting for your turn to speak”. If you do not listen to a person and just wait to speak, people will automatically dismiss you as an uninterested person that only thinks about himself.
- Be genuine in your interest
Do not act is if you are interested when you are not, people can sense when you are lying and acting. Although it may seem rude, it is even ruder to act as if you are interested in the topic someone is talking about. Try to find a branch of the topic you are discussing to divert the conversation to somewhere you are both interested in. Or do your research before meeting the person so you at least can find something of mutual interest.
- Mind your body language (and tone)
The belief is that all communication is 55% body language, 38% is tone of voice and a mere 7% is actual words. The best thing is to do some research on body language and what the difference is between open and closed body language and try to practice. It is very important to make sure you are giving off the right messages when you are talking to a person.
- Find out who you truly are
Knowing yourself to the core means that you will be able to answer all questions directed to you swiftly and without doubt. But also knowing yourself, means that you are able to identify how you would like to be talked to and what kind of questions you would like to be asked when in conversation. Truly knowing who you are gives you a big advantage in every situation that you will be in. This step is last, because it takes dedication and self-investigation to find out who you are. But the fruits of your labor will be a lifelong benefit.
